My proposal is to provide two more ZIPs: first would contain PL Portable without CHM file, second - same CHM file, so you can code "Documentation" menu item so that it asks for whether or not to download CHM file if such is absent.

Could do that ... Hate to add another archive to distribute, but is certainly doable. I actually considered it, but am hoping there is a large consensus on the issue. If there is, then I can go one way or the other. I've been trying to reduce the number of editions for some time, so hate to go the other direction .. as minor as this particular one is.

I say YES, remove it. As we who use portable edition, we know what we are doing.

1Mb is so small in todays storage medium that I say it has negligible effect. I say keep it as it is. When you want a help file, you don't want to have to go find and download it..especially while working on some remote system trying to effect repairs.

This was my original thinking too, and why it was always in the installer and (remains) in the portable edition. However, there are a certain number of people who are under the misconception that the smaller the download the 'tighter' the program. Indeed, this is not even true of executables. A 100KB executable can use 2GB of RAM, lol. Regardless, having a small size does have this perceptive advantage.

I may try to reduce the size of the CHM docs one more time as well. If I fail, I'll create two packages of the Portable Edition. If I succeed, I'll restore CHM docs everywhere.

As a side note, the CHM docs have become so out of date it is absurd. They are still useful, but I need to update them.

My point for removing it was to save space. When you have a 1GB disaster/fix/recovery USB stick, every meg counts to add as much as possible in it you might need :)

Indeed ... I guess two separate archives will be the answer. Not that much trouble, not like a whole new build.
