Title: I need assistance with a specific game.
Post by: cornyprint on January 08, 2024, 02:55:12 AM
Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask, but I could really need your assistance. I have a good-spec CPU, an Intel i5 13500, and a GPU, a 4070.

I play a game called Maplestory; it's an old game that essentially runs on RAM, the CPU, and other hardware. Some of the newer Intel 12 and 13 generation processors don't seem to work well with the game; in my opinion, older processors perform better and AMD works great.

Could you please provide me with some advice on how to perhaps disable some cores or any other tips? Maybe try designing the game CPU to function like an AMD X3D or similar to the old Intel CPUs, if you can afford to do so.

You can experiment with the number of cores. Since older games like Maplestory tend to benefit from single-threaded performance, using 2 or 4 cores might be ideal. This method will ensure that Maplestory doesn't try to use more cores than it can handle, reducing potential stutter or poor performance.

Find the option for CPU Core Management. If necessary, turn off the E-cores (Efficient Cores) and retain solely the P-cores (Performance Cores). Reduce the number of threads by adjusting Hyper-Threading if necessary.

To optimize Maplestory on your Intel i5 13500, try disabling some CPU cores via Task Manager by setting the game's affinity to use fewer cores, ideally 2 or 4. Run the game in compatibility mode for an older Windows version, lower the graphics settings, and consider using software like Process Lasso to manage CPU usage.

Use tools like MSI Afterburner or HWMonitor to keep an eye on CPU and GPU usage while playing. This can help you identify any bottlenecks.

Limit Active Cores – Set CPU affinity in Task Manager to use only P-Cores (CPU 0-5).
Disable E-Cores in BIOS – Improves single-core performance.
Enable Compatibility Mode – Set MapleStory.exe to Windows 7 mode & disable fullscreen optimizations.
Use Process Lasso – Set CPU affinity & priority to High.
Disable E-Cores via Registry – Run bcdedit /set useplatformclock true in Command Prompt

Try limiting cores via Task Manager (Set Affinity), or disable E-core in BIOS. Many people find MapleStory runs more stable that way.

my PC and I'm running an Intel i5 13500 paired with an RTX 4070. On paper, this setup should fly, but I've noticed some strange performance issues when playing MapleStory. As many of you probably know, this is a legacy game that's more CPU- and RAM-dependent than GPU-heavy.

MapleStory is very sensitive to core scheduling, especially on newer Intel CPUs with P-cores and E-cores. You can try disabling E-cores in BIOS, or use tools like Process Lasso to force the game to run only on specific cores. Also make sure Windows is in High Performance mode and that the game is set to high priority. These tweaks often help stabilize performance on 12th/13th gen Intel.
