Hi everyone,
I'm interested in learning how other Windows users troubleshoot performance issues when a PC starts feeling slower than usual.
Sometimes, the problem is not simply a lack of RAM or an outdated processor. Too many background applications, high disk usage, unnecessary startup programs, or a process consuming excessive CPU resources can also affect responsiveness.
When I notice a slowdown, I usually start with Task Manager to check CPU, memory, and disk usage. Then I look at startup applications and identify any processes that might be running unnecessarily. I prefer understanding the cause before making system changes or installing additional optimization tools.
I'm also curious about how people here approach power settings and CPU resource management, especially when gaming, browsing, and running other applications at the same time.
A few questions for the community:
What do you check first when Windows becomes sluggish?
Do you use built-in Windows tools or third-party utilities for troubleshooting?
Have you found any particular settings that noticeably improve responsiveness without causing stability issues?
I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially any practical tips that have worked well on your own systems.
Thanks!
I usually start with Task Manager and Resource Monitor to identify CPU, RAM, or disk bottlenecks, then review startup apps and background services, and I've found that Process Lasso can help manage CPU priorities and power profiles without resorting to risky registry tweaks or unnecessary optimization tools.
Replace Windows Defender with something better. It's a resource hog.
Check startup items and background services/tasks etc. Autorun Organizer is good at this, even though their recent v7 upgrade was an UI downgrade.
Remove unneeded Store apps. Check their Background status in Settings and disable all there but the very essential (i.e. security-system related).
