Title: Process Lasso Features
Post by: Ramesh on November 20, 2011, 02:19:26 AM
I just purchased Process Lasso Pro & love it. Have been using Gaming mode with no ill effects when gaming also ProBalance really keeps the machine running smoothly after hours of use.

Feature to enable/disable
1. Configuring foreground boost:
There are 2 settings are both able to be turned on or choose between the two.

What is the difference between:
A. Process priority class boosting
B. Thread priority boosting

2. Is it alright to schedule virtual memory trim (I do have 8GB of RAM and don't overly multitask so my idea is the program should trim my virtual memory at certain intervals.)
I feel then the virtual memory will be utilized well.

3. Unsure why when installed Process Lasso Pro it said Manage active users but didn't have (system processes included)
I chose to Manage all users and (system processes) (Not the default setting but I hope it's fine. Felt it would manage those settings more efficiently then Windows 7 task manager.)

Thank you for your assistance. I would love to try those features I stated but just need a bit of feedback before I do so.

The FAQ site answers your question: http://www.bitsum.com/docs/pl/faq.htm#should_foreground

I encourage you to read this very old article (http://www.bitsum.com/winmemboost.htm), too.

I do not know whether you mean this, but if you choose to manage all users' processes and want system processes to be *lassoed*, you need to check this box: "Run with elevated rights and manage processes of elevated rights", since system processes are highly privileged. Please clarify, I do not understand exactly what you mean.

Hi thanks for the article very informative and helpful. I have turned on Foreground boosting let's see if I experience any issues. If not yippee!

Didn't turn on virtual memory trimming :P

My 3rd question was when finished installing Process Lasso Pro it will give you an option to manage Active users or All users (System processes). I chose the second option and yes by default the following option was ticked "Run with elevated rights and manage processes of elevated rights". I'm just wondering if there is any ill effects in using the following option than Active users.

Thank you.

I let Process Lasso manage all processes it has access to (all users + start elevated), I do not see any negative after-effects, though managing of currently logged in user is the safest option.

Alright I found an issue with Process Lasso Pro whereby it's conflicting with my Comodo Internet Security Complete. It's already in my trusted list but Defense+  is giving intrusions warnings without stop in it's list as the program is trying to access cmdagent.exe & cfp.exe. Both of these services belongs to Comodo Internet Security Complete. I saw before you said that Pocess Lasso Pro never interferes with antiviruses as they may cause issues hence I'm unsure if you have listed Comodo Internet Security Complete in your exclusions. My PC intrusion numbers is climbing and causing unnecessary logging off the same error over & over again.

Please help thank you.

Problems with tamper protections often occur since Process Lasso gets information about processes, what is not tolerated by such mechanisms. There was one AFAIK, solved. As a temporary solution I propose to disable Defense+ or (sadly) uninstall Process Lasso, until this is fixed.
You may try to set Process Lasso to not manage all users' processes (and with no privileges' elevation), then Process Lasso should not even see cfp.exe and cmdagent.exe. Maybe this helps.

These programs 'go off' every time Process Lasso LOOKS at them, not acts - but looks. It is almost as if they want to make sure all task managers are forced to ignore them so that their resource utilization is never noticed, lol. Do not let the log entries worry you. I'll be working these things out with Comodo and Symantec, both of which have problems with Process Lasso and many other applications.

I have comodo firewall only. It still has the defense+ and i never get intrusion warnings. Did you go to the defense+ rules and give process lasso.exe and processgovernor.exe full access rights??

This is copied from the Symantec thread, but some things apply here.

Last things for readers, since I doubt anyone will read this whole thread, or my terrible grammar as I became emotionally destabilized by this 'bug' (yes, I get emotionally destabilized by bugs ;p).

Hi & thanks for the fast responses. Miroku4444 I shall try your solution on my test laptop and see if it works. I know Comodo Internet Security 5.8 Defense+ is very fussy but I like it because I know what every program is trying to do. Before purchasing Comodo Internet Security & Process Lasso Pro or any software for that matter I always see how their forum is like and also support and Comodo by far are very good at support as I use their paid version.

I am very happy with Process Lasso Pro & will notify Comodo about this. They probably already have a solution if the one Miroku4444 has doesn't resolve it. Comodo already has Bitsum in their trusted vendors list so I guess it's Defense+ being paranoid :-

Would choose to ignore it but when my system just goes into the thousands logging the same thing unnecessarily it needs a solution. I'm so happy the developer is working to resolve this issue fast. I guess later I need to bump my subscription to lifetime :P

I'm going to Comodo forum just to alert them see what they have figured out ;D

Thanks gtweak, bitsum.support & Miroku4444. You guys rock 8)

Hi I've started a forum thread in Comodo in alerting them of this intrusion logging. Told them the developer would like to work a solution with them hopefully their helpful and it's resolved easily.

Forum thread:
https://forums.comodo.com/news-announcements-feedback-cis/process-lasso-pro-causing-defense-intrusion-logging-t78704.0.html

Miroku4444 tried your full access rights solution sadly it didn't work or I did it wrong. Go to the following forum thread linked above & you shall see screenshots on how I gave Process Lasso Pro full access rights.

At this moment of time Defense+ has logged well over 5000+ intrusions ::)

If I do find a solution I'll post here for others to follow suite if their using the same internet security software.

Thank you.

Looked at your screenshot, and you didn't do it right. Do this:

1. go to the defense+ tab
2. click on computer security policy
3. click on the defense+ rules entry Comodo internet security. You click on the line where it says custom policy.
4. Click customize
5. go to the protection settings tab
6. In the interprocess memory access row click on modify
7. add ProcessLasso.exe and ProcessGoverner.exe  to the exceptions(Add/browse/apply)
8. hit apply
9. hit ok
10. hit apply
11. hit ok

The guy was telling you at the comodo forums to do the same thing. He just didn't tell you how to do it.

Thanks so much Miroku4444. I needed it to be explained to me in layman terms. The guy in Comodo thought I was already familiar with their product & if I were to get a step by step play he would have. You have been so helpful and my issue is solved now ;D

Now I'll wait till bitsum.support gets a workaround and remove the policy I have added into Defense+.

Dammit this is the best part the moment I solved it realized my wifi at work was having an issue getting live support from Comodo. Guess what got it solved connected to GeekBuddy and right away someone answered. Goddamn talk about rotten luck. I could have got someone to do it for me but this way I learnt some useful commands :P

At least Comodo provides a way to add a trusted process. Some other security companies do not! ;o. I will point any Comodo user complaints here, pending any alternate solutions - though of course this works fine.

Process Lasso v5.1.0.22 is an essential update if you are using a Symantec (e.g. Norton) or Comodo security product, and perhaps others as well. Some of their intrusion detection technologies are very sensitive and prevent Process Lasso from interacting with them to retrieve even some of the most basic metrics. Worst, their API hooks make it appear as though Process Lasso is the consumer of CPU cycles actually consumed by their intrusion detection technologies emission of unending numbers of duplicate log events. Multiple security products are affected by this phenomenon, some unaffected, and some affected but handle it well.
