Idea: Basic Edition?

Ok. for most people there are the following editions to use:

Professional Edition: Just about all the things a Process Lasso Poweruser could wish to use. (Costs some $$)

Normal Edition: Enough to get an on average performance boost on most PC's that can benefit from the main features, but starts out with a Pro functions able trial of about 14~30 days. (Costs $0,0)

The Problem is that I have a second PC that CAN benefit from Process Lasso, but I don't need (and preferably don't want) that PC to have access to Pro functions due to the Trial functions in the normal edition.

So my suggestion is:

Basic Edition: Just like The Normal Edition, but now MINUS the Pro trial (and the connected functions).

This or the full ability to disable all Pro Functions in the normal edition during (and after?) the trial period.  :)

Well, trial nag screen irritates you...  :)

Is there a price you would think would be fair for such an edition? Most software companies, and even download sites, have switched to bundles these days. I prefer to give the user only what he or she intended to download, and nothing else. Thus, ideally, the price would be less than free in order to simply sustain development.

FYI. My main Laptop has a Lifetime Pro license. (1 PC)
(never seen a nag screen, cause the purchase was within 7 days)
I HAVE the availability to send a single 1 year subscription to anyone. (including myself)
(bought it with the promotion)

Yet my secondary Laptop. HAS NO USE of pro features. (gaming mode, watchdog rules etc.)
The only thing it does are:
- Download/install MS updates etc.
- Print documents with my Printer/scanner
- Scan images with my Printer/scanner
- Crank it's single core Celeron 1,46GHz CPU to 100% from boot to shutdown. (thus slowing All of the above to a crawl)

@bitsum.support: Sorry but I couldn't really understand what you're trying to say.  ??? (less then free?? :o )

I think what bitsum is saying is that even if a nag-free basic version was offered(say only available to paid users in the support area), this would make another completely different product that would need updating/support along with all the others. The workload would greatly increase with no added income to offset it. Not to mention that it would eventually get leaked to various other unpaid users who would like nothing better than to get their hands on PL basic without nags, thus completely circumventing any system(nag) intended to give incentive to purchase. So not only does he not get paid and has an extra work load, but also bites into the income from his other efforts.

Hotrod actually makes my position more clear than I did ;).

However, for paid users, a reduction of features would be considered another feature. So, if that's all your asking for, then it can (and perhaps *already has*) been done. Most operations can be password protected (all changes to config file). This would knock out most of the Pro-only features from availability.

As another totally different edition, available for purchase or given away freely, it wouldn't be worth the time to maintain without adding deceitful bundles to it or charging something. It seems many users would prefer me add bundles, as they themselves know better than to allow the bundles, whilst I'm thinking of the larger masses that don't know better. I'm beginning to be on the fence about it due to the apathy I perceive from even end users, and the wide-spread industry adoption without any substantial complaint from end users. If you can't beat 'em, etc.. ;).

I look at slightly different , if the x time for full featured release was trimed down or multiple versions ,forgetting about keeping all version updated as posted above but only with a full feature version do you really know how much the more advanced features can help out .

SO IMO it would limit userbase and income which is needed to keep product moving along .

I agree completely. I would really need to be persuaded to make any change along these lines for that primary reason.

However, the customer here, being a paid customer, may simply be wanting a 'feature' -- which is limitation of the Pro-only functions from the build. That's something few want, but some need, and why I added the password support for configuration changes. This lets someone install Process Lasso on a PC, but not allow all users of that PC to make configuration changes. Of course, other methods of doing that also exist, such as setting file permissions on the configuration file. However, the 'password' is the mechanism designed to prevent utilization of any feature that uses the configuration file. I believe all Pro only features use the configuration file, thus this would do what he wants.

Thanks to my lack of documentation, half the features people don't even know are there, lol ;). I am trying to unbury a lot in v6... and finally update the documentation to a reasonable state. Though code first, to be honest, as a single man I can only do so much, and if I do have to take shortcuts, it would be on the documentation, not the code.
