On the new and old site is the forums going to be the same or different?

Jeremy Collake

I now have a final answer on this.

THESE FORUMS will be RETAINED.

I will link to them from the new https://products.bitsum.com site (already have).

However, a second account is still required. I will eventually build an 'account bridge', but first things first.

Now, I am confused.   ..."However, a second account is still required."   Will I have to get a new login?

Jeremy Collake

You will need a new login at the new site.

What I meant is that the new site's account (which is linked to new site licenses and more) isn't yet linked to the Forum.

Same way legacy license accounts at https://bitsum.com/support/ aren't linked to this forum.

The legacy site, it's licenses, and support area will always remain active, so migration of licensed accounts to the new site is optional, but is something we are planned to do in time. Right now, we'll do so manually if you request.

Take this as a  request... must get on board at the beginning. Please PM, if details needed. ;) :)

Jeremy Collake

Actually, maybe a bridge is coming quicker than I thought: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp2smfbridge/

And, sure, I'll migrate your licenses. Please let me put it on my todo list and give me some time though.

Not, getting the whip out!  ...just eager.  ;D

I think I signed up the new forum, correctly.  I got an e-mail, which said: "Thank you for registering at Simple Machines Community Forum."

Tarnak

I just logged into Simple Machines Community.  But, I don't see the connection to Bitsum.  Now, I am confused.

Jeremy Collake

WP -> SMF bridge installed, I have not tested it yet thought.

In theory, new (and maybe existing) accounts on new site gets a new forum account. I'm not sure about existing users and linking them to accounts on the new site yet.

Simple Machines Community is just the forum of Simple Machines Forum software, which is the software this forum uses. That's the only connection to Bitsum.

Our SMF based forum (this) has it's own accounts. The new site also has it's own accounts. Now, hopefully, they will use the same accounts.

p.s. And, NO, you signed up at the wrong place if you singed up at Simple Machines Community. It's nowhere you need to be ;). Sign up at https://products.bitsum.com if you haven't already.

THIS is the forum. There is no new forum. This is a bit technical, apologies for the confusion.

Anyway, aside from the confusion, if anyone wants to test the new 'account bridge' from https://products.bitsum.com to our forum here at https://bitsum.com/forum , please do so. On the current landing page, it's buried under Members submenu (seen after you sign up). I'll expose the Forum more now that we've hopefully got them linked up!

I signed up, but now I get a 404 error: Sorry, this page is not available.

Jeremy Collake

At what page? I'll have to double check everything, I literally just slapped it together just now, so maybe a typo.

Just hold on and we'll get it worked out.

EDIT: I just tested it and it appears it doesn't work right, so I'll keep working on it. But, we'll get there - finally. We've needed this for years (single account everywhere).
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

Jeremy Collake

Actually, it works backwards from what I hoped.

It will take SMF Forum accounts and create accounts at https://products.bitsum.com ... So, I'll fiddle with it more later.

I am logged in, and I took a screenshot to prove it, but for some reason the forum software is preventing me posting it in this thread.

Jeremy Collake

Hmm, interesting. It may be related to session or cookie settings. I am checking those now. I always have security locked down, so need to audit that, then, hopefully, it works going forward. Note you may need to log out and log back in, but give me some time to make these changes too.

And I found the probable 404 - the forum link at https://products.bitsum.com/forum/ , which I'll redirect here. I thought I'd changed them all already, but apparently at least one case of it exists.

Thanks for the impetus to get this 'bridge' started ;).

Tarnak

lol   - I know I am pushing it...with your patience. ;)

Tarnak

Just tried to go to my profile page - https://products.bitsum.com/wp-admin/profile.php , bit it comes up with..."You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page."

Jeremy Collake

What I'll probably need to do is move the forum to the new server, so it'll be https://products.bitsum.com/forum as the official forum URL. I'll make this migration as soon as possible, then it should all function as expected and there should be a seamless transition from the New Site account, and this SMF based forum.

Jeremy Collake

I've now completed a relocation of the forum to https://products.bitsum.com .

In theory, the account bridge between the new site and this forum should now work.

Again, I don't know how *existing* accounts at either are handled, it's something we'll have to discover together. About all I've had time to assess is it's safety and security, and it seems fine from that perspective.

Now, back to work ;).

WARNING:

If you have a legacy account at the forum, THAT account's avatar and *password* will take place of your new site account profile data.

So, if you previously held two accounts (one at the new site and one at the forum), they will now be one account using the forum's password.
