Account for SD Card Mod

While I can get the firmware kit to work fine, is there a way to account for the fact that the actual device has the SD card mod?  And can I get IPKG to install packages into the additional memory (2 Gig)  in JFFS (mmc)?  Or does one install manually by moving certain files into new JFFS sub-directories â€" such as /opt /etc â€" created after the ipkg install?  Is there a requirement to install optware to get this working?  Thanks
