I tried again with no limit set and it still didn't work. I'll set back to 25% for now. Playing battlefield 4, it will trim firefox (battle log uses firefox...they need to get away from that) but not battlefield (which is what we may want). I don't know if smart trim works with gaming mode but I do have gaming set to enable on child process of origin using wild card.

Thanks. Let me take some brain time to sort it out. We're close.

It's a beta man..take your time. We are just testing.   ;)
Chris

Explain that to the thousands of users demanding 8.0 final ;). A few weeks behind schedule I must avoid, but it's to be expected. We make best guesses. Shit happens.

Do I hear a witch hunt brewing.... :P,,LOL!

In seriousness, nobody is pushing me. It's only natural to want things faster, better.

I'm the one who pushes myself. That's how all this came to be. I just wish I'd been a bit easier on myself at times, lol.

chris635

We'll then take a break. It's 12:39am here and I'm going to bed! I'll do some more testing tomorrow afternoon.

Well that 'exploding frogs' should give you good dreams. Dunno where that came from, but it sounded funny, in a weird way.

It's hard on me, but there no distractions. Nobody to talk back, if you do speak. Nobody calling you, etc...

Just an update on my post 49 , smarttrim doesn't seem to be the issue with my game mode toggling on, an off .
Just played an 3/4 hr and it was on, off (within a min) ,then on after 1/2 hr and then back off when i quit .

PS: I have all games set with specific path to each exe, no wildcards .

Ok, so if there is any concise problem to report, please do so.

Gaming Mode and SmartTrim should, generally, be entirely unrelated and don't change either other's settings or toggles.

As I posted, problem is game mode is alternating on ,off, on etc while I am playing a game .

I am pretty sure this only started lately as i think I would of noticed it .

here log ,hope format sticks ok .

I see.

Some sort of 'hard reset' must be occurring.

Do you have forced mode enabled?
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

Jeremy Collake

Or did you happen to change the config during those times?
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

chris635

I am loading about a gigabyte worth of tabs in fire fox and leave itunes running and maybe a few others for a while with smart trim enabled, letting it decide with no limits. I'll report back in about an hour or so.
Chris

chris635

So far so good. smart trim is trimming now with no limits set. I kept ram usage under 25%.

no forced mode and I didn't do anything but play the game during that log .
BF4 exe path is set in game mode among others but that is it .
I don't use many other options , no smarttrim or watchdog ,or any of that .

I can't help with origin getting lowered priority, it needs to run in background when you run BF4 , you need browser running too .

I really dislike having to have all these app running just to do some multi-player gaming .
Bitsum QA Engineer

chris635

Smart trim seems to be working with no limits set ( I don't know what changed as I had problems yesterday with it, I must have had something set wrong). I made sure to keep ram usage below 25%. I'll do some more gaming tonight and maybe run a few stress test on my system as well.
Chris

Jeremy Collake

Per-process limits need to be added next, so you can tune the aggressiveness of the entirety of the system. Right now they are static.

This will come next beta.

Then we're almost done.
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

Jeremy Collake

I'm looking into the on/off toggling of gaming mode w/o cause too, btw. Several possibilities at this point. I'll report back as I know more.
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

chris635

Occt stress test will get trimmed if not not excluded, so it's working like it should on a heavy stress test (could cause test failures on some testers, trim will need to be excluded on these while stress testing. I ran IBT again and it failed because I did not excluded it from smart trim). As you can see, I also didn't excluded the linpack_xeon64.exe from probalance restraint and Process lasso did hold it back, yeah! (however we really don't want it to for testing purposes). Movement of the mouse did get a tad jerky but not bad. I was hammering this pretty hard. I may run Aida64 stress test as well to check as well.
Chris

Jeremy Collake

Thanks Chris! You have been very helpful.

Tonight I'll create the next beta, which should get us where we want to be.
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

chris635

I'm running both ends of the spectrum here Jeremy...LOL! I have this old toshiba latop designed for 32 bit windows 7. I have the 64 bit version on it with 2 gb of ram. It has an old amd sempron cpu in it. Smart trim will not work correctly on this when no limit is set. I figured I would run something severely gimped. Here are the pic's.
Chris

Jeremy Collake

Interesting. Let me work on this a bit more guys. I'm just finishing the new 'Smarttrim Advanced Config' dialog, which will offer a lot more.
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

chris635

Back on the main rig now. I ran aida64 stress test and it did trim it (I did forget to add the aida_bench64.dll to idle saver exclude list..oops! I fixed that real fast). As with all the stress testers I used, I did have them excluded from restraint (unless you want me to?). I think you need to be careful here. This will cause stability testing issues with overclockers and benchmarkers who don't take the time to learn how to use process lasso and bad mouth it even though it is their screw up. I don't know if any kind of fail safe can be built in or not? I have been slowly in private messages in overclocking forums talking about process lasso and what it has to offer. I have picking and choosing who though (overclockers can be a rough bunch man..).  I have been using Process lasso for a couple of years now, and only recently in the past 8 months or so really using all the power it has to offer. My hats off to you Jeremy, great software man!
Chris

edkiefer

Any type of heavy load app, like benchmarks , games ,photo editor should probably be all excluded from smarttrim IMO .

That said it good to test , just to see results .
Bitsum QA Engineer

Jeremy Collake

You guys will eventually reach the conclusion that is where I'm going ... That cloud aggregation of process data will allow users to create their own 'default' exclusions. It's coming.
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

Yes, I have. It's what I do :).

Lots to work to get there though, but 8.0 has to come soon, and we'll not be there for a while.
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

chris635

Back on ye ole worn out old lap top. I have smart trim enabled, letting it decide, with 25% ram load checked. It's been thirty minutes with ram load at 47% and smart trim is not working. To recap on this crappy lap top, no limit, smart trim doesn't work, set to 25%, smart trim doesn't work. I'll try each % setting in thirty minute intervals to see if one of them is some how the magical number.
Chris

Jeremy Collake

I think the log will probably indicate that it couldn't find eligible processes to further reduce the RAM load. It can try, but can't always get there. Let me know, and thanks!
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

Smart trim isn't even showing up in the logs at all. it's like it's not even running. Getting ready to update to the newest beta for this lap top and my main rig. I'll check back later.
Chris

Jeremy Collake

Interesting. That may be the case. It does use it's own dedicated thread, so could entirely crash (or have never been launched), whilst everything else continued unabated. I'll check the logic and code.
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

chris635

I just updated this lap top to latest beta (I'll do my main rig soon). Set trim to no limit and waiting on it to check it. I was always able to manually trim though including this latest build. So it does work there.
Chris

chris635

Back on the main rig. Process lasso updated to the new beta on it's own (I had set that way). Now smart trim no limit isn't running. I can manually trim, it will not be in the log though, as I did after screen shot.

Chris

chris635

I'm going to reboot to check if that fix's it.
Chris

Jeremy Collake

A reboot shouldn't ever be necessary, but you can restart the core engine.

You're right, if the 'Trim Now' is working, then the SmartTrim thread is active.

Let me continue dev and I'll be sure it's fixed. Please confirm when behavior is as you'd expect.

Thanks!
Software Engineer. Bitsum LLC.

It is always feel good when some new blood coming in, the forum will always active, and also new ideas. ;)

Jeremy I just noticed something in log with game mode toggling on/off , the PID # changed while gaming in 1 session .

Ok, I don't know if it is unique to BF4, but even with PL not running the PID changes the first sec when you lanch it, so this might be what were seeing .
though I thought I saw it also happen in middle of gaming session too, will have to see if same thing is there with new PID#

Edit2: It seems game exe change PID# somehow, Just checked FC3 and it does same thing .
Bitsum QA Engineer

Jeremy Collake

PIDs can ONLY be changed by terminating then relaunching a process. There must be an overseeing process that is relaunching this child as necessary, causing Gaming Mode to appropriately toggle off during that brief period

let me explain the process and what processes I see run when game starts .

There are 2 ways to run game (BF4) but I will list normal way .
you have a web- browser open to battlog site, from there you pick a server .
first Origin starts , then BF4 starts , there is a activation processes also punkbuster runs too .
But only "BF4.exe" shows and with changed PID .

I have activation and termination processes logs . I will now run game for few mins so you see what I mean .

I also looked back at old logs (10/14) and it did happen there . I think it is normal behavior , but maybe adding slight delay on power profile  be good .

Anyone else not seeing this too ?
It happens fast in first sec of BF4 running . notice at bottom of log BF4 goes from PID 4736 to 2092 , if you look at more info column, parent PID# it gets changed from origin .

Quick update: After a couple of reboots and various combination of ways for turning smart trim on and off with no limit checked for both my main rig and lap top. Still doesn't trim or even show trim was launched. It does still trim manually.

Open logviewer, then go to file>load log file or open log folder (you will see all logs stored there ).

Once you open any log file you can export it to csv and be opened by many notepad type app .

If I open it in notepad it is spaced all over the place. If I open it with excel, it's a little difficult to read.

I'm an idiot... :-[. I got it. Hold on I'll look through it and then post. It's been a day or so since I played battlefield.

It's been longer than I thought for battlefield. I'll play some tonight (wife is sick so I got the kids) then post the logs....this good for you?

Sure, you can just look at log in bottom panel, for me BF4 starts and then terminates and launches (this only shows in logs , when playing you don't see anything odd ).
it happens in first min , when you launch BF4 MP and you see the origin start then browser says finding server, connecting, load level etc .

I think its normal behavior as BF4 goes through stages till your in game , I just never noticed it before .

I added another app (not MP game) to game mode and this behavior doesn't happen . It also happens with PL not running (The BF4 PID# changes) .
