So, they start blocking the other to using the old MD5? :)

Office:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817308
The performance for word convert to PDF has been improve, as they support modern, multi-core CPU more better(I think it is multi-threads)

Prepares for Windows 8.1:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2871389
They has this update to enable the ability to update from windows 8 to windows 8.1 via store, when it is release.

-----
Just like the windows 8.1 preview, they need to install KB2871389 to upgrade from windows 8 to windows 8.1
And it seen like we can't using windows 8 activate code to directly install windows 8.1, without install and upgrade from windows 8.

edkiefer

still no update fixes for the botched updates last month , I know they removed a few but there were few left and gave trouble .
If you had issue you had to remove it .
forget Kb#

http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/microsoft-botches-six-windows-patches-in-latest-automatic-update-224988
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Yes, windows update only responsible "update", it don't uninstall the botched updates after Microsoft pull it I think....
And for anyone that don't know, windows 8.1 got some update push to them too. ;)

edkiefer

Sure, it doesn't uninstall , but they should update the update  ;D so it works right w/o issue .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

And they only push the update that fix the broken update next month, so you will facing this issues one month!!!(except it is a vulnerabilities I think.)
---
Another Windows update issue, you can't install this KB 2810009, and it will repeat showing the error 80242009.(and manual install works, but it will showing in Windows update too.)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2810009

QuoteI just wanted to give a heads up to some recent issues that we are seeing across Office Deployment.

    Security Fixes MS13-072 and MS13-073 MS13-074

Two security updates released yesterday MS13-072, MS13-073 and MS13-074, These are installing fine but if you scan the machine again for updates, show up again and again and again. Currently there is no fix available for these other than to say that the update is applied but it is not getting properly detected. The product group is aware of the issues and are working on it.

We appreciate your patience and understand on this.

Thank you.

http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-pulls-buggy-outlook-2013-update-7000020556/

It look like after windows 8(and worst after windows 8.1 preview) is coming out, there are rush on pushing broken update... :P

edkiefer

Yes, I don't have Access so that update I didn't get .

Lately between MS and Nvidia not sure whats going on  .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

QuoteLately between MS and Nvidia not sure whats going on  .
More information? :)
As I know Nvidia driver has been start getting more issue like burning Fermi graphic card, stutter and performance drop for many person.(not me as I don't record the FPS every driver and it is optimus, display is handle by Intel HD4000)

edkiefer

nothing to confirm on my side, I have not updated since 314.07 , no issues here .
but judging from all the issues many have with freezes , TDR 's among other game issues seems the 32x.xx is having hard time with stability .

Lets see what next version does .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Yup, and I just get some information about the next WHQL driver, they just found some bug and it will taking some time.
So I guess we might get the driver next week, as they don't has ETA, I can't confirm which date the WHQL driver will coming out.

And this show that, sometimes the newest/latest one don't mean the best stability, except it fix some stability issue without bring more stability issue. ;)

edkiefer

two things come to mind IMO .

1) It doesn't really matter with Nvidia on beta or WHQL as far as stability .

2) They should not mention ETA on WHQL or even beta , just get out a beta like once a month as long as progress happened .

Being once a developer I can say its worst thing to do , it hardly helps by giving a release time .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Yup. ;)
Many times I saw some online game getting the patch out on ETA, as it is their ETA, and causing many issue when gamer is playing...

BenYeeHua

Not too much, they are using many small updates to fix the driver vulnerabilities.
And a vulnerabilities for some OpenType or TrueType font files.

Some performance improve for USB webcam, fixed some shortcut key on the keyboard stop working.
Some high DPI issues for office, this is one of the biggest issues for windows, which you has many software don't support High DPI correctly...

For Flash Player, when they has a release note?
http://helpx.adobe.com/en/flash-player/release-note/fp_119_air_39_release_notes.html
---
So I just check awhile, it look like they only has the release notes after they change like from 11.8 to 11.9.

Anyways, if you has any issues like BSOD after install the update, just post at here to let other people know.  :)

BenYeeHua

It look like Microsoft still patching the Windows 8, even Windows 8.1 has being coming out.
----
lol, I never know IE has changelog for it. ;)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2888505

And they disable IE 11 Enhanced Protected Mode, so it look like many add-on(active-x) don't support x64 yet.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2907803

People who having the DirectX 10(not DirectX 10.1) Graphic card, you can install this update to fix some DX10.1/11 app/game that causing UI issues.
But I think which UI it's means.... as Game has UI like the menu.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2882780

If I am right, the fix on Windows 8.1 has also patch on Windows 8, which is USB 3.0 driver like power on/off for device that asking too much current.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2894513

And they disable RC4 too, which is disabled as default with Windows 8.1, it look like just Windows 8.1 are for testing, after stable, they patch it on Windows 8 ;D
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisory/2868725

I think some of you like the WordPad in Windows 8, which is a small version for Office, they has fix some vulnerability for it.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms13-089

That's all, I am updating my PlanetSide 2 to getting that FPS increase too. ;)

PS:Flash Player and Air also got update, so remember to update it. :D

edkiefer

Just Installed IE11 on win7 through windows update  , they set the enhanced protection mode off by default, same with the tracking protection stuff .
I enabled tracking protection but didn't yet with enhanced protection mode .
Seems to run ok , didn't see any bad reports , not that I use it much .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

I has enabled Enhanced Protected Mode for a long time, 1 year since I am start using Windows 8, no issues so far, as most of my add-on/active-x support 32/64-bit.  :)

And good news for Windows 8.1 user, so far 1 of the 2 bug that stopping me for update to Windows 8.1 has a workaround, and the other bug is on the graphic card driver.

The mouse issues on Game software that using DirectInput for example.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2908279

1394264 - Optimus: Can't use dGPU after update to Windows 8.1.
And this bug for Nvidia driver too, I hope the non-unicode issues will be fixed, as there are many non-unicode software for "small size" like game for example, this will affecting many thing. :P

BenYeeHua

So today is the day, again. :)

I just using IPv6 to update, it look like I am connect to 2600:140b:1f::3cfe:8e11, a Akamai CDN servers to download the update.
-------
Update to Revoke Non-compliant UEFI Modules
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisory/2871690

Applications disappear from the Start screen after you refresh a Windows RT, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012-based computer by using a push-button reset recovery image
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2877213

Files or folders are removed unexpectedly when you perform a cut-and-paste operation on a Windows FTP client that is connected to an FTP site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2891804

Based on the update for UEFI Modules, and this one.
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890830

I just found out that windows 8.1 has the UEFI Modules fix when it's just come out, and Windows 8.1 no longer using MSRT, it look like they switch to or improved their Windows Defender.

And ya, 1 thing about Windows Defender for windows 8.1, it has a feature that repair the system DLL, if they found out the DLL is broken or something like that, then they will download the same version from Microsoft website, and repair it.
It may look like not so NEW, but who(anti-virus) has a bigger store and knowing more about Windows? ;)
----
And ya.
While I am downloading the Adobe Flash Player for IE10, I has downloaded the Adobe Flash Player for Firefox, via manually.
I just thinking that, is it right for letting Windows Update handle the Adobe Flash Player update?

As I know, many people like to disable the Windows Update, but they strangely not disable other software update, I guess it is because software normally don't causing crash or BSoD.
So for people like that, moving the Adobe Flash Player update to Windows Update will/might increase their risk for facing more security issues.

And it will be fun to find out that, did moving the update to Windows Update will affecting how many people, as normally people are using Chrome. ;D
-----
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2905454/en

It look like this update also only without Windows 8.1, I wonder what's windows 8.1 changed?
Maybe something that don't need to get the update from Windows Update, but just sync?

edkiefer

I never used windows update for Adobe Flash Player , I patch IE and FF at same times .
If its big version upgrade I use there flash uninstall tool first before update .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Ya, but start from Windows 8, you has to update them via Windows Update, as it is just like Chrome, has a special design for IE10/11.

You can check that the hardware acceleration is gone for IE on Windows 8/8.1. :)

Anyways, I hope many software provider can provide their own uninstaller to clean up the thing that left over, if their uninstaller is stop working normally for some reason.
Or just don't left too much thing that will affecting the system, or software itself.

BenYeeHua

It is the day again, but we got many thing too.(but less from MS) ;)
AMD Kaveri, but only reducing the power consumption for now(increase CPU performance, but reducing frequency as it is bulk, not SOI), as no even one HSA software can run.
So Intel is still a winner for CPU, and AMD fail to show off their GPU power, as they can't solve their bandwidth issues for GPU, and not many gamer need that performance level to playing game.
But it can be a new thing for more easy to compute with GPU, we don't know until the software is coming out. :D

It look like as Windows 8.1 Update 1 is coming out, or it is New year, I don't get many update for Windows 8. :)

Only 1 fix for Flash player, 1 fix for issues that might facing if you try to update Windows 8 to windows 8.1, and rarely TCP connection issues?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2917499
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2897602

And if you need something to read, you can read about this, it is very long. ;)
https://blog.mozilla.org/luke/2014/01/14/asm-js-aot-compilation-and-startup-performance/
---
As this is too less for this post, just a small tips.
If you has a software that is minimized to taskbar, you can double click it to get a restore downed/not maximized window.
But I guess no one need that. ;)

edkiefer

Yes, AMD, Nvidia an all rest are still on 2xnm ( for Kaveri 28nm)  so not much power or performance can be haved w/o making chip use more energy .

intel has big leg up here and hopefully they won't drop the ball increasing there HD graphics with next/newer chips .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Quoteintel has big leg up here and hopefully they won't drop the ball increasing there HD graphics with next/newer chips .
For this, I think Intel will increase the gaming performance for GPU too, even Intel is not one of the HSA member.
(but I am not sure about compute, as it look like this is just for saving bandwidth to improve GPU performance only.)
Because it is strangely that Intel support 1 thing to improve the GPU performance with Haswell, which is one thing for HSA.
QuoteThe second extension, InstantAccess is simply Intel's implementation of zero copy. Although Intel's processor graphics have supported unified memory for a while (CPU + GPU share the same physical memory), the two processors don't get direct access to each others memory space. Instead, if the GPU needs to work on something the CPU has in memory, it needs to make its own copy of it first. The copy process is time consuming and wasteful. As we march towards true heterogeneous computing, we need ways of allowing both processors to work on the same data in memory. With InstantAccess, Intel's graphics driver can deliver a pointer to a location in GPU memory that the CPU can then access directly. The CPU can work on that GPU address without a copy and then release it back to the GPU. AMD introduced support for something similar back with Llano.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6863/intels-pixelsync-instantaccess-two-new-directx-extensions-for-haswell

So I think that HSA can be future, but the issues is the standard for HSA, and Intel don't agree standard set by AMD I guess?

And even HSA making GPGPU more easy, but it increase more issues for devs, so they need to learn about how to using GPGPU too, and also transfer of data, as the latency between CPU and GPU is still there, they just reduced.
----
Back to Topic, I got a small patch, but it look like even it is small patch, but it can be important.
(without restart, so don't worry about after installed this update you need to restart your computer)
QuoteThis update package resolves the following issues:
•Resolves an issue that could cause quality degradation when you stream specific video formats to Xbox 360 consoles.
•Resolves an issue that could cause a 0x80073cf9 error when you download Windows Store apps.
•Resolves an issue that could cause the decoding of multi-scan JPEG files to fail.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2822241

The thing you might like to know is/are
2813298 - Update is available that resolves stability issues in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 â€"based computers that have Atom processers
2821819 - USB devices stop responding in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012
2822343 - CR/LF characters in the "FriendlyName" value of a USB 3.0 extensible Host Controller don't query in applications in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012
2823243 - Volume-licensed copy of Windows 8 prompts for activation unexpectedly
2823250 - Inconsistent options for power settings on certain Windows 8 or Windows RT-based devices
2823506 - "0x000000A0" Stop error when you resume Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 from hibernate
2835627 - How to force automatic restarts after important updates in Windows 8

And some of the fix is for Atom processor, so don't worry about Wintel is gone, they are still there, and MS love the low power for tablet of Atom. ;)
---
A little tips here.

If you see TiWorker.exe is running and biting CPU+Hard Disk usage, it is just compress unused file that get replaced/patched and keeping the old file by Windows Update.

If you don't like that, you can just remove the old file that get updated by Windows Update, but remember!
After you deleted the old file, you can never uninstall the Update, as the old file is not there, Windows update can't get the old file, then replace the new file.
So except you really lack of disk space, and it is stable after update/you like to reinstall windows than uninstall update, then it is not recommend that remove the old file.  ;)

edkiefer

The HSA will definilty help portables and APU's  but I wonder if there be some issues at first when using dGPU were now you have fast GDDR memory working with slower system memory . I wonder if latency or timings will get hurt .

Even though I am on Win7 and none of those installed today, I noticed whatever of 3 patches (kb2913602, Kb2913431 and Kb2862330 ) , one made all my USB devices resync with system .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Yup, that is for Windows 8, as windows 8 start removing old code I guess, and also making small change into 1 patch every month, but not the SP(Service Pack), and let the Update 1 becoming a big patch.

For HSA, I don't think it will help portables, as you can just see how many difference hardware with smartphone.
And mobile need less power consumption, they will love cloud compute for them.
Except many people need GPU process power for processing thing on their smartphone, or it will not very helpful.

BenYeeHua

So it is the day again, but this time without Adobe Flash Player update, as they has updated 3-5 days ago.  ;)

We get IE, .net, and VBS update for most windows, if you are IE11 user, it is recommended to install it.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2909921

2907810  Update that helps you manage your Internet Explorer 11 home page
This update might helps reducing some malware software changing your home page, I guess?
Because I wonder how it know it is you are changing it, or the software are simulating that user is changing it :P

For windows 8, we only get IPv6 update, which might showing that using Windows 8.1 will be fixed this issues earlier, like what I said before?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms14-006

Anyways, most of the update is for Denial of Service, or just script and malware website.
And you might learn something from the IE update. ;)

edkiefer

Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Yup, this month is for IE update, not Windows update.
But many software is using the core of IE, so it can be count as Windows update too. ;D

Anyways, I guess they are putting most of the jobs on their Windows 8.1 Update 1 now.  :)

Update for those getting errors or problems with previous updates an services .

PS: have not run it here as haven't run into any issues with windows update so can not comment on how good it works .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Me too, don't facing any issues on Windows Update yet, except 2-5 years ago.(Windows XP) ;)
But yes, the DISM.exe is getting famous to repair the system file, since Windows 8 coming out.
I also found some corrupt file while checking it, I guess it is caused by the BSoD that I facing before. :D

edkiefer

Yes, I think I will wait a bit before running it ,its suppose to come to windows update later , maybe with newer version .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

BenYeeHua

21 days without reboot~  ;)
For now, some process PID is 1xxxx, I wonder how many computer can made it to more than 20000+ PID. :D
(Of cause without using a script to run and end the process again and again.)

But now I has to reboot and update many thing. ;D

The Silverlight got a update, and it might taking long time to install, on my side, he just repeat running the same process, end it, until I open the "My Computer".
This might be caused by the IE is running.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2932677

DirectShow get some fix
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2929961

And so did XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2930275

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2894853

And a memory leaks
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2929755

Of cause, the Adobe(Flash Player, Air) get some update too. ;)

PS:The Office 2013 get SP1 too, but it is few week ago.  :)

edkiefer

Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Interesting...
So it means that Windows 8+ is with SSL, and I hope there are not bug inside the SSL code or the Microsoft servers. ;D

edkiefer

Don't know, just checked windows update after reading your post and showed 8 important/critical updates .

PS: I shutdown my system each night so normally it be tomorrow i see the updates .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Ya, and I just damaged some of my file, as I force shut down after the driver is not detect my monitor...
Lucky I update the windows first, then update the driver, so only some startup software is affected.  :)

Anyways, I wonder how many user will report the WER to Microsoft, so the dev of that software can get the dump from Microsoft. :P

BenYeeHua

I don't install the updates yet, but it is very little(for Windows 8), I guess it is really time for me upgrade this computer to Windows 8.1 Update 1. :)

Nothing much for Windows 8, only normal update for Flash, IE, and also .bat and .cmd that normal people really don't run.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms14-019

And a funny power save bug, that got disabled while updating the USB input device. ;D
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2934123

For Office 2013...
Huge Patch for security update!!!

The total is 1.8GB, I think it might less if you installed Office 2013 SP1.

And nope, if you are using Office most of the time, I will said that just update it, except you don't really care about security. :)

edkiefer

Yes, there was 7 updates for win7 , two for IE11 .

From what I have read the 8.1 update1 seems good direction .
Bitsum QA Engineer

BenYeeHua

Yup, so I guess only Windows 8 is getting less fix.

And for Windows 8.1, to know more about it, using it myself is better than reading about how good it is, so I am trying to find a ways to download the installer in a better ways.

As you know, slow internet connection is huge pain for downloading huge file, so I may choose using the ISO upgrade rather than Windows Store upgrade. ;D

BenYeeHua

For fastest update, I can just patch with Update 1, which having all the update before.
And here is some update I see in the Windows Update, look like Windows 8.1 Update 1 patch is not in there.
Maybe it only showing up after some patch is installed. :)

So, here is some update that is for Windows 8.1, and it is monthly patch+some interesting info about it. ;)

QuoteAssume that you have a Windows 8.1-based device that is connected to an authenticated proxy. In this situation, Windows Location Provider fails the geolocation lookup for IP addresses or Wi-Fi location sources. Therefore, no location information is available for the device unless it has GPS. For example, the Bing Maps app cannot place your location on a map, and the Bing Weather app cannot determine your city.
QuoteAssume that a Windows 8.1-based computer has the fast startup feature enabled. When you right-click the Start hint and then select the Shut down option to shut down the computer, the shutdown time is longer than when you shut down the computer by using the new Windows UI. Additionally, the system will take much longer to start the next time that you start the computer.

Cause
When you select the Shut down option from the right-click context menu on the Start hint, the system will do a complete shutdown even though the fast startup feature is enabled. However, when you shut down the computer by using the new Windows UI, the system will enter a hybrid sleep state.
QuoteWhen you have a computer that has the High Precision Event Timer (HPET) hardware timer and Windows 8.1 installed, you encounter a 0x9F Stop error from the Usbhub.sys driver.

Cause
This issue occurs because both the HPET hardware timer and the hardware itself update certain registers at the same time, and this leads to a race condition.

Yup, using the web installer is the safest ways to make sure all needed installer will be download and install.
And this is normal, Microsoft never push newer .Net or C++ runtime(if I am right, Windows Update also showing C++ patch only) via Windows Update, only patch, except you want to install it, or like update to Windows 8.1 which having .Net 4.5.1 installed. :)

Also something interesting, for the patch that fixing .Net, it don't list .Net 4.5.2, but Windows Update still patch it.
I guess Microsoft is waiting some user like me as their "lab rats", testing it before letting anyone that reading the patch note will found this newer .Net. ;)
---
And also some fact about the MA(Microsoft Anti-Malware), for Windows 7 users that using MSE, they are "lab rats" too.
After being tested by Windows 7 MSE users, the patch will be pushed to Windows 8+ users that using Windows Defense.

So yup, except it is the software like IE or Windows Defense that bundled into Windows, you will be a safer "lab rats" that download it via MS website, as they also has some chosen users to access the beta too. 8)

ok, I guess i installed 4.5 at one point as I have 4.5.1 , I did get security update yesterday but I check net version via registry and I am at 4.5.1 so I would do web update , which MS recommends .

Hmm, maybe Microsoft did update .net 4.5 to something like 4.5.2, but not a big version jump like .Net 4.0 to 4.5 etc. :)

Improved Family Safety web filtering function.
QuoteAfter this update is installed, parents have more flexibility to filter out unsuitable web content and a complete view of the search terms their children use on search engines.

Family Safety provides activity reports that show parents the search terms their children enter when they use a search engine. Family Safety also enforces the "safe search" feature by communicating this setting to search engine sites every time a child performs a search. The "safe search" setting causes search engines to filter adult material out of all search results. Currently, some search engine sites require that web browser connections to their sites use encryption, and this impedes our ability to implement these search engine safety features. The Family Safety update can continue to provide these search engine safety features to Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 users.
